Alleged murderer nabbed by local law enforcement

UMATILLA COUNTY – The Umatilla County Sheriff’s Office, backed up by the Oregon State Police have arrested a man wanted for murder in San Diego. Edward Thomas Childs, 34, was taken into custody in the Hermiston area on Wednesday.

UCSO reports that a detective from San Diego contacted the dispatch center at about 4:55 p.m. that day, asking help in attempting to arrest Childs, who they suspected of murder. An arrest warrant had been issued and the detective said they had information that Childs was in the area.

UCSO Detective Mike Ellwood located the suspect’s vehicle parked on Harper Road in Hermiston. He requested assistance and was backed up by Oregon State Police. The sheriff’s office said that the trooper initiated a traffic stop on Highway 395, and both he trooper and Ellwood made contact. They identified, arrested, and lodged Childs to await extradition efforts from San Diego.

According to reports in San Diego media, Childs is a San Diego resident who police there believe shot and killed Charles Jordan, 55, by shooting him in the head. The shooting occurred on Nov. 5 in the East Village area of the city.
