PENDLETON – William Harvey Butcher III, 28, is due in Sixth Circuit Court Judge Christopher Brauer’s courtroom tomorrow (Wednesday). He allegedly beat Daniel Self, 47, to death in June 2020.

Umatilla County District Attorney Dan Primus said that Butcher has been evaluated by the Oregon State Hospital and is deemed fit to stand trial.

“It’s a thorough evaluation not only for an individual’s mental capacity but it’s really an opportunity to make sure they are fit to proceed,” Primus said.

He added that in addition to exploring the suspect’s mental health, the state hospital also works to educate them and make sure they understand the basics of the criminal justice system.

“We’re proceeding talking with defense counsel to see if there are any opportunities for negotiations or if further evaluations need to be done,’ he said.
