PENDLETON – The National Weather Service has issued an air stagnation advisory that will be in effect until 4 a.m. Friday. The advisory is for a wide region and includes the cities of Pendleton, Hermiston, Walla Walla, Heppner, Boardman, Dayton, Pilot Rock, Dufur, Waitsburg, Ione, Goldendale, the Tri-Cities, and Yakima.

Forecasters say poor air quality is due to an inversion and stagnant air conditions near the surface that will continue to trap pollutants. Due to the limited movement of air across the area, pollution has the potential to increase to dangerous levels.

People with respiratory illnesses should follow their physician’s advice for dealing with high levels of air pollution. State air quality agencies highly recommend that no outdoor burning occur and that residential wood-burning devices be used as little as possible.

The advisory is due to be lifted early Friday morning as rain is expected to move into the area.
