SALEM – On April 13, any bills before the Oregon Legislature that had not had at least one public hearing and work session were dead. Sen. Bill Hansell (R-Athena) thought the bill requiring overtime for farm workers was among the legislation that didn’t make it. Then he learned that while the Senate version died, the House of Representatives version is alive and well.

“That’s another dynamic,” he said. “In one chamber you think it might be done, but there’s something in the other chamber.”

Hansell said he fears some bills that might appear to be dead could still be alive in the other chamber.

There’s little doubt where the senator from Athena stands on House Bill 2358.

“Being a farm boy, when harvest came, you harvested,” he said. “It’s just part of what we do, and we’ve gotten along fine.”
