HARNEY COUNTY-Effective Friday, May 15, the south section of the Steens Mountain Loop Road is open to Big Indian Gorge Overlook. Visitors can now access the South Steens Family and Equestrian Campgrounds, explore the historic Riddle Brothers Ranch, and drive right through the South Steens wild horse Herd Management Area. Wildflowers are also beginning to bloom across the lower elevations.
Thanks to a very light winter and below-average snowpack, visitors can expect the upper portions of the Steens Loop Road to open earlier than usual this year. Current road conditions are always up to date on TripCheck at: https://ow.ly/erRW50YZRjh
Before heading out:
• Fuel up and bring plenty of water
• Expect little to no cell service
• Roads can be rough – high-clearance vehicles are recommended
• Don’t rely solely on GPS; bring a current map
