Additional Union and Wallowa County streams classified as essential salmonid habitats

UNION & WALLOWA COUNTIES – In a recent release, the Oregon Department of State Lands announced that it published the 2025 essential salmonid habitat map, including newly classified streams in Union and Wallowa counties. This map, as described in the release:

“Identifies streams that are critical habitat for Chinook salmon, steelhead trout, and other sensitive, threatened or endangered fish species. Oregon law protects these streams by requiring a removal-fill permit for most projects that remove or add any materials.” 

According to the draft 2025 map update, the following local waterbodies were reclassified as essential salmonid habitats, out of a total 113 reclassified steam miles across the state:

Union County

  • A tributary stream of Bear Creek near Camp Elkanah 
  • A portion of Campbell Creek near its intersection with Meadow Creek near Camp Elkanah
  • A portion of Warms Springs Creek near its intersection with the Grande Ronde River, Northeast of Starkey
  • Little Graves Creek, West of La Grande
  • Little Rock Creek, West of La Grande
  • Pfefferkorn Canyon near Summerville
  • Hacker Creek near Summerville
  • A portion of Warm Creek from its intersection with Murphy Creek to approximately the City of Cove

Wallowa County

  • A portion of Cabin Creek at its intersection with the Grande Ronde River, North of Promise
