JOHN DAY – Several parents are reportedly outraged after an English Teacher at Grant Union Jr./Sr. High School issued an assignment that many are saying was inappropriate and crossed several lines. One parent took to social media to post a photo of the assignment (see below).

Ms. Rebecca Batease issued an assignment to her Junior High English class earlier this week asking the students to pick one of two prompts to write about. According to parent Jessica Moore, the prompt regarding the number 69 was in response to students who were joking about it earlier.

In an interview with our newsroom, Jessica Moore stated that after talking with her 13-year-old daughter who is in the class, Ms. Batease instructed one of the students to look up the meaning on a school-issued Chromebook.

JESSICA MOORE: “My daughter said…everyone knew it was inappropriate, you know, they knew it was something dirty. She said they actually didn’t know what it really meant until she [Ms. Batease] had them Google it in the classroom that day.”

On Friday, a statement was issued by Grant School District 3 Superintendent Louis Dix:

In other news out of the school district—on Tuesday, Superintendent Dix, along with his wife Laurie, both put in their resignations with Grant School District 3. Mr. Dix gave our newsroom the following statement:

“I’m now looking forward to my next journey in life, retirement! I’ve had a very good 31 years in education. I’m looking forward to spending more time with my kids, family, etc. We’ll keep people posted.”
