EASTERN OREGON – According to the National Weather Service, Eastern Oregon temperatures in June will be above normal with below normal precipitation. Already a dry spring, June will only enhance dryness on the forest floors making it more vulnerable for fire starts. Forest fire officials say, they are asking visitors to the forest to take extra precautions when camping or just enjoying a day trip.
“It’s time for everyone to put their Smokey hat on,” said Oregon Department of Forestry’s Fire Prevention Coordinator Tom Fields. “The continued drought and unseasonably warm weather we’re facing could lead to unintentional wildfires.” Wallowa County announced last week a county wide drought emergency has been declared. Fields says that ODF firefighters have already been busy this year with 267 fires burning over 1,900 acres around the state, more than twice the 10-year average for number of fires.
