A Permanent Reminder to Always Driver Sober

LA GRANDE – With winter conditions out in force, the most prominent concerns for many drivers are likely ice, snow, wind and fog. However, conditions outside the car are far from the only fatal hazard that can befall someone behind the wheel. Decisions made by a driver and the condition they choose to leave themself in can mean the difference between life and death. Driving under the influence is never justifiable no matter the circumstances or the distance traveled. While some may get off lucky with an arrest record, a hangover and an opportunity to learn from their mistakes, many more don’t get a second chance. A grim reminder of this fact is currently sitting in the parking lot of 1701 Adams Avenue, La Grande for all to see. As written on the sign next to the wreck:

“IN LOVING MEMORY

JULIO ALBERTO HERNANDEZ

 AUGUST 22, 1990, TO MARCH 15, 2009

Julio Alberto Hernandez, “twinky,” was born on August 22, 1990, in Ontario, Oregon. Julio grew up in Weiser, Idaho. He was the youngest of 8 brothers and sisters. Julio loved athletic activities, especially football and soccer.

Julio Attended Weiser High School through his sophomore year and at the time of his death he was 18 years old.

On the morning of March 15, 2009, Julio used poor judgment by drinking and driving his father’s vehicle too fast. Julio was drinking at a party in Payette, Idaho, and when he left the party, he was a passenger in his father’s car. At the time, Julio was reported to be visibly intoxicated. His girlfriend drove him to Nampa, Idaho, where he took control of the car from her. Then, by himself, he drove toward Weiser, Idaho.

His life came to an abrupt and tragic end a short time later as he entered a 35mph zone in Annex, Oregon. The crash event began when he crossed the opposing lane in a left curve at a high rate of speed. The vehicle left the west roadway edge, became airborne and struck a power pole. This force of the collision sheered off the power pole above the ground. His vehicle carried the upper portion of the pole to another collision with a second power pole. This subsequent collision heavily damaged the second power pole, resulting in the vehicle bursting into flames. Julio’s Remains were found in the back seat where he was burned beyond recognition. Julio’s blood alcohol level at the time of the crash was 0.21%

Julio was loved by his family and friends. He leaves behind his mother, father, 5 older sisters, 2 older brothers and his girlfriend. He will be missed. His family and friends are now left dealing with the heartache knowing that he is gone forever.

Please learn from Julio’s mistake. If we can save one life by donating his car to the ODOT Team Safety Program, it will bring some meaning to Julio’s Death.”
