A look at ‘toxic stress’ during Child Abuse Prevention Month

JOHN DAY/BURNS – April is Child Abuse Prevention Month. Grant Harney County CASA Executive Director Hannah Hinman explains that when a child experiences abuse or neglect, they are undergoing a form of toxic stress, which could lead to further complications in life:

“It might lead to things like lifelong difficulties in learning and self-regulation.

You know, we can teach coping skills, but sthere is something that’s been done to the brain at the architectural level when a child experiences toxic stress.”

Hinman shared this link from Harvard University regarding the effects of toxic stress:  https://developingchild.harvard.edu/resources/stress-and-resilience-how-toxic-stress-affects-us-and-what-we-can-do-about-it/.
