SALEM – The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife reports that a wolf from the Horseshoe Wolf Pack in the Meacham area has been trapped and lethally removed on private land where previous depredations occurred. The wolf was an uncollared, non-breeding, adult male. It was taken by USDA Wildlife Services acting as the agent for the livestock producer.
ODFW authorized lethal action on Sept. 8 following two depredations on cattle within three weeks. On Oct. 6 that permit was extended until Oct. 28 after the producer lost another calf to wolves. Since that time, an additional two depredations have been confirmed despite the landowner’s continued use of non-lethal measures. Those measures included camping with their cattle and hazing.
When trapping is authorized for the removal of the wolves, ODFW must approve the protocols, agents and equipment. For example, only traps suitable for wolves that allow for the safe release of other wildlife may be used. The producer’s permit allows them or their agent to take an additional wolf from this pack.
There remain at least six wolves in the pack, including at least one pup according to ODFW trail camera photos.
