JOHN DAY – According to Grant County Sheriff Todd McKinley, on the afternoon of April 12th, a neighbor in the area of the John Day Golf Course and Vista Lane noticed a fire that had broken out on a home’s front porch. Her quick actions in summoning aid from a group of nearby golfers helped limit the damages to the home.
A heat lamp on three young chickens had caught some of the bedding on fire, which led to the deck catching fire.
The golfers who responded used water from a nearby hot tub, and were able to hook up a garden hose to get flowing water on the fire prior to the arrival of first responders.
Sheriff McKinley stated, “Their actions were instrumental in preventing a significant loss of property and damage.”
He wrote in an email, “As Sheriff, this is what I like to see. Neighbors helping neighbors and looking out for each other. There needs to be more of this. And the chickens survived.”
