A highway 244 project will slow travel

STARKEY, OR – A $1.5 million dollars construction project has begun on Highway 244 between Starkey and Red Bridge State Park, from milepost 35 to 36 the next several weeks.  Re-aligning the highway will take place, stabilizing the slope adjacent to the Grande Ronde River.  Also, a short retaining wall will be constructed.  Beginning today, barriers will be put in place to keep excavation debris from getting into the lane of travel.

During work hours, traffic will be controlled by flaggers.  During non-work hours, traffic will be controlled by temporary traffic signals.  This means there will be delays 24/7 once the barrier is in place.  Delays are expected to be no more than 20 minutes, normally a bit less.  ODOT and our contractors ask that you please be patient and plan extra time if you need to travel through this area.Next week, blasting will occur, at that time 2-hour wait time could be expected.
