Sheriff McKinley warns of uptick in Grant County cybercrime

JOHN DAY – Grant County Sheriff Todd McKinley was on KJDY’s Coffee Time recently and urged listeners to stay vigilant and be aware of cyber fraud. Cases appear to be increasing, and local individuals and entities are getting scammed out of hundreds of thousands of dollars, in some cases. Unfortunately, the Sheriff said a victim must suffer losses in the millions of dollars before hitting the threshold for the FBI to take the case. He said victims are strongly encouraged to report the fraudulent activity to the FBI’s cybercrime reporting site, ic3.gov:

“What occurs there at ic3.gov, is essentially, you put your information into there. It goes into their algorithm, or however it is, and they compare it to other ones that have been received. Maybe you have a little piece of evidence for the bigger scam that’s going on that helps lead them to these actors. Then, if they can aggregate 35 different victims, or 60, or 100 across the nation that has a common thread, then it gets to the threshold for them to assign someone to.”
