ADAMS — Dollar General is seeking to open a new store in Adams, a proposal that will require a development permit and a city variance to exceed local building size limits.

The Adams Planning Commission met via Zoom last month with Greg Gastineu, a Colorado-based representative for Dollar General Corporation, to discuss the project. City staff reported productive talks regarding the potential impact the retail store could have on the city and its residents.

The proposed site is located off Highway 11, southwest of the intersection of Preston Street and Old Oregon-Washington Highway. The store would occupy the parcel between where farm machinery is currently parked and the lot where the cell tower sits across from the hay sheds.

Plans call for an approximately 9,000-square-foot facility. Because city code restricts commercial buildings to 5,000 square feet, the project cannot move forward without a variance alongside its development permit.

If approved, the store would operate daily from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and employ three to five workers.

City officials are seeking community input through a resident survey distributed with local water bills. Residents may return completed surveys with their bill payments or drop them off directly at Adams City Hall.

The Adams Planning Commission is scheduled to meet Thursday at 6:30 p.m.
