PENDLETON – The Pendleton Development Commission has agreed to expand the urban renewal district to include a portion of May Park at 180 S.E. Isaac Ave. on the South Hill. The park is in disrepair and community members hope to find funds to fix up the skatepark and basketball courts there.

“It’s a park in need of upgrades,” City Manager Robb Corbett said. “There’s some interest on the minds of the Pendleton Development Commission to potentially use urban development funds to redevelop that park.”

Corbett said that the expansion is only for part of the park. It does not extend to the old John Murray Junior High School building or other structures.

“It’s a park that has an old skatepark on it and old basketball courts,” he said. “The idea is that might be the only way we can get that park renovated.”

Corbett said part of the PDC’s mission is to bring new life to neighborhoods, and this would be a good example of that. The group that wants to improve the park will still need to go through the application process for urban renewal funding.
