Malheur National Forest firewood cutting begins Oct. 6th

JOHN DAY, PRAIRIE CITY, AND HINES – (Press Release from the Malheur National Forest)

Firewood permits on the Malheur National Forest will be available through a new online e-Permit system beginning October 6, 2026. This convenient option allows users to obtain permits from a computer or mobile device at any time, with no trip to a Forest Service office required.

Two permits are available through this system; Personal Use Firewood (no cost) and Commercial Firewood ($5 per cord).  https://epermits.fs2c.usda.gov/forest/0604. Permits will still be available at local forest offices, including post and pole, longer lengths, boughs and pinecones. The forest no longer offers permits by mail.

Tags and e-Permits must be printed, and no digital copies will be accepted. Personal Use firewood permits are for personal use firewood only. Those who receive Personal Use firewood permits may use firewood for cutting, manufacturing, handling, or other processing, but not for resale. The cord limit is 8 for personal use.

Commercial Use firewood can be sold unlike Personal Use, with a limit of 8 cord. Customers may get both Personal and Commercial Use permits.

A valid permit, firewood tags (Personal Use and Commercial Use), maps and regulations will still be required to have on hand when cutting and transporting firewood.
