SUMPTER — (Press Release from the Wallowa-Whitman National Forest)
Crews continue to remove residual slash and debris generated by contingency operations in remote areas and transport it to staging areas along Upper Cracker Creek Road, with completion targeted for Friday. Mastication and excavator work also continues along Deer Creek, Pole Creek, and Spalding Ridge Roads.
A Type 2 handcrew is working near Blady Creek and the wilderness to rehab dozer lines. Crews are clearing slash and closing constructed dozer lines.
Areas in the northwestern portion of the fire, within the remaining uncontained line, continue to smolder in dead and down material, producing visible smoke at times.
As suppression repair work progresses, excess resources will be demobilized. Some of the heavy equipment is expected to be demobilized by the end of the week. Piles of slash and debris in the Crane Flat area are expected to be removed over the weekend and into next week.
Road and area closures remain in effect while this work continues. These closures are in place to help keep firefighters, equipment, and the public safe.
With hunting season getting into full swing, please check current road and area closures before heading into the field and make sure they do not affect your hunting unit.
