Dust storm triggers 12-vehicle pileup near Kennewick, leaving 1 dead

KENNEWICK — A person died and several others were injured Friday afternoon in a 12-vehicle pileup on Highway 397 near Kennewick after strong winds generated a severe dust storm, authorities said.
Emergency crews responded around 2 p.m. to the multi-vehicle crash, located west of South Olympia Street just outside Kennewick city limits. The Washington State Patrol reported that dust whipped up by high winds drastically reduced visibility, causing multiple blocking collisions along the corridor.
According to Benton County Fire District No. 1, the crash involved 12 vehicles, including two semi-trucks. One of the commercial trucks was carrying hazardous materials, but officials confirmed no hazardous substances leaked.
Responders confirmed one fatality at the scene and treated multiple injured individuals.
State troopers and local law enforcement have closed State Route 397 between Nine Canyon Road and Interstate 82, with no access available at Olympia Street. Authorities urge drivers to avoid the area and use detours so emergency personnel can transport the wounded and clear the roadway. Detours are available via local routes.
The Washington State Patrol is leading the ongoing investigation.
