Five-acre brush fire damages outbuilding, one treated for smoke inhalation in Hermiston

HERMISTON — Firefighters quickly contained a five-acre brush fire that threatened homes in Hermiston Tuesday afternoon, officials said.

Crews with Umatilla County Fire District No. 1 were dispatched at 1:33 p.m. to reports of a fire near Northeast Seventh Street threatening nearby structures. Arriving emergency personnel found active flames moving through dry brush toward residential properties.

Firefighters managed to stop the forward progression of the fire before it could reach any primary residences. Mutual aid agencies, including the Umatilla Rural Fire Protection District and the Echo Fire Department, assisted in controlling the blaze.

While no homes were destroyed, the fire consumed about five acres and destroyed one outbuilding and a chicken coop.

One person requested emergency medical services and received on-scene treatment for a smoke-related illness. No major injuries were reported.

The Umatilla Electric Cooperative and the Umatilla County Sheriff’s Office also assisted at the scene. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
