Halfway man arrested following stolen vehicle and firearm incident

HALFWAY – (Press Release from the Baker County Sheriff’s Office)
On September 20, 2026 at approximately 12:33 p.m., Baker County Sheriff’s Office Dispatch received a report of a disturbance in Halfway.
Deputy Downing made contact with the reporting party. The reporting party indicated that there was a disagreement between his sons, identified as Jerald Robert Wright and Johnny Wright. Jerald left the residence in Johnny’s 1982 GMC pickup and sent him a text message, which caused Johnny alarm. Once Jerald left, Johnny realized that one of his firearms was missing. After searching the area, attempts to locate Jerald were unsuccessful.
Later that evening, Oregon State Police encountered the vehicle near Farewell Bend. They contacted Jerald and located the stolen shotgun in the vehicle.
Deputy Downing arrested Jerald and transported him to the Baker County Jail where he was lodged. He was charged with Menacing, Unauthorized Use of a Motor Vehicle, Theft I, and Felon in Possession of a Firearm.
Baker County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by Oregon State Police and HTR Recovery.
