Grant County Courthouse to begin entrance screening Sept. 28th

CANYON CITY – Grant County Court Trial Administrator Samantha Dowell issued a press release regarding the new screening process at the Grant County Courthouse’s west entrance. Read the full release below:

Following an unexpected delay, the Grant County Courthouse is now in the final stages of implementing entrance screening. A walk‑through metal detector and X‑ray screening are now scheduled to go live on September 28 at the new public entrance on the back (west) side of the courthouse at the southernmost door. All other entrances, including the former front (east) entrance, will remain locked to the public.
This entrance screening process aligns the Grant County Courthouse with safety practices used in most courthouses across Oregon. Grant County has been one of the last counties in the state without security screening, and this implementation is intended to provide a safer environment for the public, courthouse staff, jurors, and justice partners.
We recognize that this change may cause inconvenience, and we sincerely appreciate the community’s patience and cooperation as these protections are put in place.
State law makes it a serious crime to bring firearms or weapons into a courthouse. Presiding Judge Order restricts other prohibited items. These restrictions apply to all visitors, including individuals with valid concealed handgun licenses.
Visitors are encouraged to allow a few extra minutes when arriving for court proceedings or appointments. Court security staff will be available to guide visitors through the process and answer questions.
