Blue Mountain Hospital District staff undergo obstetrics simulation training for high-risk situations

JOHN DAY – Blue Mountain Hospital District reports that staff participated in a care simulation in their obstetrics department. Read the information posted by the district below:

Last week, our team participated in an obstetric simulation focused on preparing for high-risk, time-sensitive situations that can arise during labor and delivery.

The simulation was facilitated by the Oregon Perinatal Collaborative, a statewide initiative dedicated to improving obstetric care and outcomes across Oregon.

Our team worked through three scenarios: one involving shoulder dystocia and two postpartum hemorrhage scenarios, each involving a different cause of hemorrhage. These simulations give our healthcare teams an opportunity to practice communication, coordination and clinical skills in a realistic setting so we’re better prepared when every second counts.

Participating departments included everyone that would be involved in a real life scenario: Nurses, our Nurse Midwife Dawn Marten, Dr. Mumford, Surgery, Respiratory Therapy and EMS. This kind of multidisciplinary teamwork is an important part of providing safe, high-quality care for our patients.

At Blue Mountain Hospital, we conduct care simulations at least twice a year, with obstetric simulations taking place at least once annually. We’re proud to continually invest in training and preparedness for our community.
