Wildfires damage Snake River habitat units, prompting USACE safety warnings

WALLA WALLA — Recent wildland fires have damaged several habitat management units along the Snake River, prompting federal officials to warn autumn visitors of potential safety hazards.

The United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Walla Walla District reported extensive burn damage across public lands popular for fishing, hunting, and hiking. Officials urge hunters and outdoor enthusiasts to adjust their fall plans, prioritize personal safety, and remain alert for degraded wildlife habitat and unstable terrain.

Significantly burned properties include the Hollebeke, 55 Mile, and Skookum units in the western district, alongside the Lyons Ferry, Texas Rapids, and Little Goose Landing units to the east.
