LA GRANDE – (Press release from the Oregon Department of Transportation) Beginning this week, travelers on I-84 in La Grande between Exit 259 at Oro Dell and the OR 82 (Wallowa Lake Highway) overpass will see left lane and shoulder closures in both directions as crews begin a two-year bridge improvement project on the I-84 bridges over Spruce Street. This year’s work includes building crossovers to accommodate bridge work in 2027.
Plan for changing traffic patterns and brief delays.
Crossover construction is expected to last through October 2026. Bridge repairs are scheduled for 2027.
What are crossovers?
Crossovers shift traffic from one side of the highway to the other, reducing the road to a single lane in each direction. They give workers more space, reduce traffic conflicts, and limit how often crews need to set up traffic control devices.
About this project
The I-84: Bridges over North Spruce Street (La Grande) are showing signs of wear. Repairs will preserve and extend the bridge’s life, improve safety, and prolong the need for replacement.
Work includes:
Other traffic impacts
In addition to left lane closures, drivers should expect reduced speeds on I-84 in both directions between Exit 259 at Oro Dell and the OR 82 (Wallowa Lake Highway) overpass.
Drivers should remain alert for new traffic patterns and increased roadside activity.
This is a two-year project with a scheduled completion in October 2027.
Construction schedules may change based on weather and project needs. Updates will be provided on the project webpage.
