WALLOWA COUNTY – The Wallowa County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents of a new impersonation scam. Specifically, one of its own members, deputy Wick, is being impersonated by scammers in an attempt to trick residents into sending money.
As with previous impersonation scams, scammers (pretending to be Deputy Wick in this case) are calling victims and demanding payment for fraudulent reasons, usually asking for the money to be sent via gift cards, cryptocurrency or other forms of non-conventional payment. These payment demands are scams!
While deputy Wick or other members of law enforcement may contact residents for legitimate reasons, the Wallowa County Sheriff’s Office will NEVER demand payment over the phone for any reason. If any residents receive calls from someone claiming to be from WCSO and requesting payment, remember the following:
