Reminder: Hermiston hosts ODOT for open house on Punkin Center, U.S. 395 improvement project

HERMISTON – The public is invited to learn about planned safety improvements at the intersection of Highway 395 and Punkin Center Road tomorrow (Tuesday) from 5:30-7 p.m. The open house will be held in city council chambers of Hermiston City Hall, 180 NE Second St.
The Oregon Department of Transportation says the event will begin with a short presentation. Then, breakout stations will be staffed so the public can speak with staff about key components of the project. Topics to be covered include design, right of way, and construction.
The project includes removing the existing traffic signal at the intersection, building a two-lane roundabout, upgrading ADA curb ramps, and adding lighting as well as bicycle and pedestrian facilities. The goal is to help slow vehicles, reduce crashes, improve traffic flow, and create safer conditions for all road users.
ODOT says the roundabout will be designed to accommodate the types of vehicles that already use the intersection. Those include school buses, farm equipment, trucks with trailers, and oversized freight.
“According to the Federal Highway Administration, roundabouts are safer than traditional intersections and typically have fewer injuries and crashes,” a statement from ODOT reads. “They can also lower maintenance costs and improve fuel efficiency.”
