Burnt Creek Fire grows to 1,944 acres Level 1 evacuations issued

ENTERPRISE — The Burnt Creek Fire has burned 1,944 acres as a Level One “Be Ready” evacuation notice was issued for residences on Joseph Creek Road.

A northwest incident management team assumed command Tuesday morning in coordination with the Oregon Department of Forestry and the U.S. Forest Service.

Crews from the Anthony Fire also assisted to help bolster containment operations and improve overall firefighting capacity.

Officials say the fire’s behavior remains highly active, exhibiting sustained upslope runs driven by preheated fuels. The fire is also moving down drainages, where channeled winds and fuels are enhancing downhill spread.

Drivers are asked to be cautious on Oregon Highway 3, as smoke is reducing visibility.

Water-scooping aircraft are utilizing local water sources, including Wallowa Lake, and anyone recreating is asked to use caution and stay clear of the aircraft.

Officials says warming trends this week along with lowering moisture levels are increasing the likelihood of active fire spread.
