Crews battle shifting winds, tough terrain to save Irrigon homes from fire

IRRIGON – The quick work of fire crews saved residences off Daisy Lane in Irrigon on Wednesday evening as winds whipped around a vegetation fire.
Irrigon Fire Department officials said crews responded at around 6:30 p.m. to a 2-acre vegetation fire that was spreading at a moderate rate towards homes. Firefighters prioritized saving homes as they worked to contain the fire amid shifting winds.
The fire progressed into a marshy area with limited access and sandy terrain, which made the suppression efforts more difficult.
Due the fire’s potential for rapid growth, assistance was requested from Boardman Fire Rescue, Umatilla Rural Fire, and U.S. wildland fire services. Local residents and businesses also chipped in with equipment and resources for firefighters.
No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
“As always, we thank our firefighters, mutual aid partners, and community members for working together to help protect the Irrigon community,” Irrigon Fire said in a statement.
