WALLA WALLA COUNTY — Amazon’s plans for a massive new data center campus in Walla Walla County have hit a temporary bureaucratic speed bump. Local officials have halted the application process until the tech giant addresses missing environmental and infrastructure details.
The Walla Walla County Community Development Department notified Amazon Data Services on Tuesday that its applications for a Site Development Permit and State Environmental Policy Act (SEPA) review are incomplete. To resume processing, Amazon must submit a Traffic Impact Analysis to determine what transportation upgrades are needed to handle the campus’s projected traffic.
The proposed Amazon Attalia Data Center Campus is slated for a 134-acre site along Sundance Road, between Dodd and Worden Road, east of US-12, near Burbank. Public records show the sprawling development will feature three 220,000-square-foot data center buildings. The complex is also designed to include a 1,400-square-foot security building, a 9,675-square-foot industrial water facility, storage tanks, and a pad for a future utility substation. Initial site work involves clearing space for access roads, parking, fencing, landscaping, and evaporation ponds.
Community Development Director Melissa Shumake warned Amazon that Walla Walla County has a strict 60-day window to provide a traffic study. The company must submit the required documentation by August 24. Failure to meet the deadline will render the application null and void, with no refund of fees.
