La Grande Fire Chief reminds citizens to be fire safe this Independence Day

LA GRANDE — La Grande Fire Department Chief Merle Laci is reminding citizens to help prevent forest fires this Independence Day.

The following message was shared by the La Grande Fire Department

“As we prepare to celebrate Independence Day and our nation’s 250th birthday, I am asking for our community’s help in preventing fires.

Our area is experiencing extremely dry conditions, and it would take very little to start a fast-moving fire that could threaten homes, businesses, and property. The Fourth of July is also one of the busiest times of the year for fire departments. While the La Grande Fire Department will increase staffing and be prepared to respond, multiple fires can quickly stretch available resources.

Illegal fireworks, including bottle rockets, Roman candles, firecrackers, M-80s, and any firework that flies or explodes, pose a serious fire danger. With current conditions, a single spark can have significant consequences. Please help us keep La Grande safe by following Oregon’s fireworks laws and making safe choices this Independence Day.
