Elgin Lions distribute flags to local first graders, clean highways, present scholarships, and more

IMBLER & ELGIN – (Release from the Elgin Lions Club) The Elgin Lions club completed their annual project of distributing flags to all first graders in the Imbler and Elgin Schools. Eleven Lions were on hand to discuss the history and meaning of the flag to the eager students. Lion members were also on hand to help count laps for the Elgin students collecting money for their school project.

Under the chair of Barbara Hawes, ten Lions cleaned the highway into Elgin, collecting 19 bags of garbage. President Pat McDonald represented the club in presenting a $1000 scholarship to a high school student. Chair Ellie Ranoe shared with the club that the Lions’ Community Garden has 25 boxes in repair. She asked the club to also contribute garden hoses and nozzles for the garden, stating that 17 of the boxes had been requested. The club supplies water, tools, and fertilizer for the community members.

The Elgin Lions are sponsoring a Little League baseball team, as well as assisting any families who are not able to pay the entry fees.

The club sent $1500 to the Oregon Sight and Hearing program, which is recognized as one of the top programs in the fifty states, and assists with research, surgery and distribution of glasses and hearing aids
