La Grande Parks and Rec reminds residents to keep their trees watered

LA GRANDE – It may still be spring, but summer is seemingly closer than ever. More infrequent precipitation and periods of higher temperatures can easily put a strain on urban vegetation, and it’s not just lawns that need help staying green. For any property owners needing a bit of direction on how to best keep their trees healthy during heat spikes, the La Grande Parks and Recreation Department recently posted the following tips on urban tree watering:

  • Water your trees regularly. A good rule of thumb is three times per week with five gallons of water each time: 3 x 5 = 15 gallons per week. Exact amounts can vary based on your soil and the weather. If the top couple inches of soil are dry, it’s time for another drink!
  • Water slowly. Watering slowly allows the moisture to reach the tree roots and prevents water run-off. Use a watering bag, drip hose, or a five-gallon bucket with small holes drilled in the bottom.
  • Mulch! Use woodchip mulch to help retain soil moisture, add organic matter, and keep tree roots protected.
  • Watch out for drought stress. This is extra important after our dry winter! If the leaves droop or wilt, it may be from lack of water. If the leaves curl, turn brown at the tips and margins or turn yellow in the summer, your tree is probably showing signs of drought stress.
