La Grande Lions Club active with activities

LA GRANDE – (Release from the La Grande Lions Club) Members of the La Grande Lions recently completed the American Red Cross Blood Drive. The group participates for one-half day pre-scheduling donors and provides escort service accompanying donors from their donation table to the refreshment table. There are four drives each calendar year, held at the LDS Stake Center.

Some of the Fair Booth equipment was sold by the Lions, but they will continue doing the breakfast servings. Chairman Brent Lewis said that the Lions will have their first flower planting in May at the Union County Fairgrounds. The Fair manager purchases petunias grown by the Imbler High School FFA. A second floral planting will be held in June by the Lions. Vice-president Jennifer Williams stated that the park will have holes dug for the trees to be planted for Arbor Day, and trees just need to be planted. Lewis noted that the club presented a check for $3000 to the Volleyball Ladies. He added that the Lions are supporting the La Grande High School Baseball program with a Rib Feed (ten cases) to be held April 1st. The proceeds will also be used for the Lions Baseball Field.

The La Grande Lions have also run the “Coats for Kids” program during the year. The members made a donation of $900 to purchase sizes they don’t normally have enough.  Lewis recognized Grocery Outlet for donating detergents for washing gently used coats.

Guest speaker was Margaret Spence, Middle School Librarian.  Spence has started numerous clubs at the school including a chess club, after school art club, crocheting, and book club. Some of the students volunteered to be on the team for the Oregon Battle of the Books, whereby the teams must be familiar with 16 selected books and compete with their knowledge of the books. Six teams of four members went to the Regional competition in Baker City and captured a first -place trophy. That team will go on to the state meet in Salem. Spence said they will be renting an Air B & B located in an old 1910 schoolhouse in Dalles. Spence indicated donations would help the team and the Lions will discuss the amount of support at their next cabinet meeting.  Spence added, “They are doing so well, we think we might have a chance at State.”
