MT. VERNON – Firefighting resources were dispatched yesterday afternoon to a location on Highway 26, between John Day and Mt. Vernon, for a structure fire. Grant County Emergency Communications logs indicate the incident was a shed that was on fire. The call came in at approximately 4:25 p.m. on March 18th.
Mt. Vernon Fire Chief Justin May told our newsroom that at this time, officials aren’t completely sure what caused the fire. The Chief said about 50% of the shed and its contents were lost to the blaze. Damage was also reported to two equipment trailers and a fence. Fortunately, there were no injuries as a result of the incident.
Chief May said the Mt. Vernon Fire Department had two water tenders and three engines on the scene, and the John Day Fire Department assisted with a Type 3 engine. The Grant County Sheriff’s Office, Oregon State Police, and Oregon Department of Transportation also had personnel assisting at the scene.
