Huntington man loses life in Washington Street crash

HUNTINGTON – (Release from Baker County Sheriff) On March 10, 2026 at approximately 2:59 p.m., Sgt. Rilee was on patrol in Huntington, Oregon when he came upon a vehicle crash. While traveling on West Washington Street near West 2nd Street, he located a 1997 Ford F250 pickup that struck a tree. Huntington Fire, Pioneer Ambulance and Life Flight responded.

Sgt. Rilee contacted the driver and sole occupant, identified as John Marvin Whitmire (77 yoa). Whitmire had visible injuries to his face and hand. During the contact, Whitmire’s condition began to decline. Medics initiated life-saving efforts. Despite these efforts, Whitmore succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

During the investigation, it was determined that Whitmire was traveling on West Washington Street when his vehicle left the roadway and struck a tree.

Baker County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by Huntington Fire, Pioneer Ambulance and Life Flight.
