BAKER CITY Officials with the Wallowa-Whitman National Forest are reminding the public that groomed snow trails are closed to wheeled vehicles during the winter. The Forest Service reports the ruts from wheeled traffic has damaged several miles of groomed trail in the Salt Creek Summit area.  Travel in these areas for wheeled vehicles typically opens in April. The Wallowa-Whitman National Forest’s over-snow routes and trails provide accessible and enjoyable recreation opportunities for a variety of users, including snowmobilers, skiers, dogsledders, and snowshoers.

Wheeled traffic on designated over-snow routes recently caused significant damage to many miles of groomed trails in the Salt Creek Summit area. Groomed over-snow routes are closed to wheeled vehicles for the winter recreation season, typically ending in April.

Driving wheeled vehicles on these routes is hazardous and creates an undue burden on local emergency services should a vehicle become stuck. Additionally, the damage left by wheeled traffic negates the hard work of our volunteer groomer operators and creates unsafe and unpleasant conditions for motorized and non-motorized trail users.
