OSP Arrest wrong-way drunk driver in Baker City

BAKER CITY – A 26-year-old New Mexico man was arrested by the Oregon State Police last Friday for driving the wrong way on I-84 and being caught at over double the legal blood alcohol limit. The incident was initially reported at 11:23 p.m. on Friday, February 20 near Milepost 306 along I-84 westbound, just south of Baker City.

A full summary of the arrest, as provided by OSP in a recent press log, is as follows:

“On the above mentioned date and time, the Oregon State Police was dispatched to a wrong way driver near MP 306 on I-84 traveling EB in the WB lanes. The pickup was located at the Maverick parking lot in Baker City and indicators of impairment were observed when speaking with the driver. The driver consented to SFST’s where additional indicators of impairment were observed. 

The driver wanted to speak with an attorney and was arrested. The driver was transported to the BCJ where a search warrant was granted and the driver provided a BAC of 0.19%. The driver was lodged at the jail on the listed crimes and the vehicle was 780 impounded by Blue Mtn Towing. OSP was assisted by the Baker City Police Department.”

The driver was identified as 26-year-old Ukiah Leighton Smith of Kirtland New Mexico. specific charges at the time of arrest, according to OSP, included:

  • DUII Intoxicants
  • Reckless Driving
  • Reckless Endangering Person
  • Carry Concealed Weapon
  • No Operator’s License
  • Open Container of Alcohol
