WALLOWA COUNTY – Eagle Cap VFW Post 4307 has officially been named the 2024-2025 National Community Service Post of the year for the State of Oregon. The Post has had quite a busy year and has served as an essential hub for community activities according to Commander Jim Henson. Post 4307 and Auxiliary participated in the City of Wallowa’s 4th of July Parade and the Chief Joseph Days Parade, with use of the Post frequently donated for veteran group counselling, often with Center for Wellness personnel in attendance.
The Post is also available to both senior citizen and, particularly, youth activities, including baseball, basketball, little league, the Wallowa High School Trap Shooting club, and various hunter safety courses. From October through April, the Post and Auxiliary host taco feeds for community outreach, recruiting, and fundraising.
On the more patriotic side of things, the Post and Auxiliary stayed involved in Memorial Day Activities, including putting out and collecting over 1,200 flags this year and conducting a Memorial Day Service at the Wallowa Courthouse. The Post and Auxiliary further are delegated the honor of conducting funeral services for fallen veterans, including a rifle squad when available. Outside of activities at the Post itself, members stayed busy supporting the community in other ways. As written by Commander Henson:
“When possible, members volunteer their time at the hospital, specifically with the Wallowa Memorial Hospital Rehabilitation Therapy department. The Post and Auxiliary frequently provide members with transportation to and from various appointments. The Auxiliary, with assistance from Post members, provides a Veterans Day breakfast, free to all veterans.”
Finaly, the Post remains available to rent for graduation ceremonies, birthdays, and various other community activities.
