JOHN DAY, PRAIRIE CITY, & HINES – (Press Release from the Malheur National Forest)
The Malheur National Forest has announced that firewood cutting permits will be available starting January 20, 2026. Permits will be available at all Malheur National Forest offices.
Personal Use and Commercial Use permits will be available. Personal Use firewood permits are for personal use firewood only. Those who receive Personal Use firewood permits may use firewood for cutting, manufacturing, handling, or other processing, but not for resale. Minimum for personal use is 4 cords with a maximum of 8 per household.
The regional minimum rate for Commercial Use firewood permits remains unchanged at $5 per cord, with a 4-cord minimum, with a maximum of 8 cord per household per year. Commercial Use firewood can be sold unlike Personal Use. Customers may get both Personal and Commercial Use permits with a total of 16 cord per household.
A valid permit, firewood tags (Personal Use and Commercial Use), maps and regulations will still be required to have on hand when cutting and transporting firewood.
