BAKER CITY — A man is in jail after using a shotgun to shoot the door of a shared room in his house as a means to evict a couple that had been staying there.  On January 10th at approximately 9:14 a.m., a Baker City Police Officer responded to a location on Baker Street for the report of assault.

It was written by the arresting officer in the Probable Cause Affidavit that a man had fired a shotgun inside of his house to get two individuals to leave, who had reportedly been living in the other room.

Gregory Raymond Alvarez, 64, was arrested and is being held in the Baker County Jail on charges including two counts each of Assault II, Recklessly Endangering, and Pointing a Firearm at Another, as well as one count each of Unlawful Use of a Weapon and Menacing.

The affidavit states, “Upon contact with Alvarez inside the kitchen of his residence he stated that [withheld] and [withheld] had been living in one of the rooms for about one month and he wanted them to leave. Alvarez said he had been telling them since the night before to leave, and that they wouldn’t leave…He said that in the morning, after they continued to refuse to leave, he fired [the] shotgun at their door.” Soon after Alvarez fired the shotgun, the couple left and contacted police.

Alvarez stated to the arresting officer that instead using of the conventional method of firing a shotgun, he “…rested the barrel of the shotgun on the chair, pointing it at the door, and using hammer in his left hand, he struck the back of the shotgun shell that was in the chamber. He said when he discharged it, it knocked his hand back.” Neither of the individuals in the other room reported injuries.

Alvarez was arrested without incident and is currently lodged in the Baker County Jail.

A Baker City Police sergeant, a detective, and an additional officer provided additional assistance at the scene.
