Pendleton ice rink rebuild moves forward

PENDLETON โ€“ The plan to rebuild the ice rink in Roy Raley Park has not gone according to plan. Pendleton Parks and Recreation Director Liam Hughes says the delays were due to unforeseen insurance and permitting problems. He now has good news.

โ€œWe actually broke ground a few days ago, and so now we are rolling forward,โ€ Hughes said. โ€œWe are anticipating a completion date in March.โ€

The ice rink sits atop the former city swimming pool, which was filled in and capped with concrete in the 1960s. The concrete, which was used as the base of the rink, began to fail, prompting the rebuild.

The city selected a contractor to build a new rink. When it closed at the end of the 2024-25 season, the old rink was demolished, the concrete pad was excavated, and the site was prepped for the new contractor. However, the contractor experienced delays in securing the correct bonds for a project of this size. Once that work is finished, the new concrete will require an additional 30 days to cure.
