COVE – Snow is falling, the official start to winter is a couple days away, and a dedicated group of high schoolers have just completed a semester’s worth of rigorous wildland training. Earlier this week, the Cove School District reported that the 1st semester fire science class officially completed their final day of hands-on training for Fall 2025. This brings an end to weeks’ worth of, as written by the district:

“Cold trailing, scraping, hand line, hose lays, butterflying hose, and Fire shelter Training and triage of a house for fire danger. Of course some steak cooking as well. What a great class!!”

For those unfamiliar, the Cove Fire Science Class, taught by veteran firefighter and Cove Athletics Director Brett Dunten, is a semester-long course offered in the fall and spring providing hands on firefighting training and NWCG certification for Cove High School students. Participating students attend the zero-period class in the early morning, with hands-on training in specific wildland firefighting tasks, and a focus on the effort and commitment of serving as a wildland firefighter.

Elkhorn Media Group Interviewed Brett Dunten and several fire science students about the course back in spring.
