HEPPNER – For the seventh time in school history the Heppner Mustangs football team will be headed to the 2A state championship game. Seeking their fourth overall title, and first since 2019.

Much like last week’s semifinal game against St. Paul, the Mustangs play another opponent they faced earlier in the season in Lost River. The score of that Sep. 12 game appeared lopsided with 43-8 final score, but Mustangs coach Robert Wilson said that score is misleading because of mistakes by Lost River.

“If they didn’t turn the ball over it could’ve been a completely different game,” he said. “We’re going to have to play good defense, we’re going to have to be disciplined.”

Wilson was part of the coaching staff during the 2019 championship season. He said although it’s his first year as the head coach he’s just continuing what Mustang football has built.

“When something works you don’t necessarily change a lot, you just keep it rolling and fine tune the things you want to change and go from there,” said Wilson.

The 2A Championship Game is Saturday at 1 p.m. at Summit High School in Bend.
