US Army Corps of Engineers advances fish passage, power generation with two major projects

WALLA WALLA – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Walla Walla District is simultaneously making strides in hydropower modernization and ecological restoration across the region.
Ice Harbor Dam turbine replacement completed
The Corps and Voith Hydro recently completed a decade-long modernization project at Ice Harbor Lock and Dam in Burbank. The final turbine was successfully lowered into the powerhouse, concluding the replacement of units one through three. The new, state-of-the-art turbines are designed to significantly improve fish passage while also increasing the region’s hydropower generation capacity.
Bateman Island Causeway removal contract awarded

Separately, the Walla Walla District, in partnership with the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife, the Yakama Nation, the Washington Department of Ecology, and the Mid-Columbia Fisheries Enhancement Group, awarded a $1.2 million contract to Pipkin Incorporated.
Starting in December, this project will focus on the removal of the Bateman Island Causeway near Richland. The Corps notes that the causeway currently restricts water flow and harms salmon migration. Removing the structure is expected to restore the Yakima River Delta’s ecological function, improve water quality, and benefit the overall river ecosystem.
