WALLA WALLA – Last Thursday, the Walla Walla County Department of Community Health was informed that three wild birds tested positive for avian influenza, also known as bird flue. The affected birds, two Canada geese and one great-horned owl, were collected in and around the Pioneer Park area throughout October.

WWCDCH is collaborating with state health and wildlife departments to address the situation, but no human cases have been reported in the county.

Avian influenza primarily affects wild birds, spreading easily among them. Human infections are rare but can occur through direct contact with infected animals or environments.

Public health officials advise against approaching sick or dead wildlife and recommend reporting sick or dead domestic birds to the Washington State Department of Agriculture (WSDA) Sick Bird Hotline at 1-800-606-3056.
