PILOT ROCK – Pilot Rock Rural Fire Protection District (PRFD) has provided an update following an Aug. 18 fire that broke out inside its station.

PRFD says the fire started in its newest vehicle, Tender 51, and the cause is still under investigation. Officials said the fire caused significant damage to trucks, critical equipment, and portions of the building and that the building remains temporarily closed for safety and assessment.

PRFD added that firefighters have been operating out of their Command SUV for EMS responses and are working with Pendleton Fire and Ambulance to provide essential fire suppression, EMS, and rescue operations.

Looking forward PRFD says it’s working with restoration contractors and insurance partners to minimize the downtime. The district has a short-term goal of getting the office and three north bays operational for emergency responses but didn’t provide a time-frame, adding that it has acquired two wildland apparatus from the Oregon Department of Forestry that are being prepared for response.

“The outpouring of kindness from Pilot Rock residents has been overwhelming. A special thank you to those who offered immediate help, donations, and words of encouragement,” PRFD said in a prepared statement. “We’re stronger because of you.”
