WALLA WALLA – Walla Walla County’s Board of Commissioner have proclaimed the week of September 29 through October 5 as “Week Without Driving.” The week is a national campaign founded by Disability Rights Washington to highlight transportation access and equity. The purpose is to challenge residents to go a week without driving either by using other forms of transportation such as walking or cycling, or to utilize public transportation to better understand how transportation connectivity and accessibility can be improved.
College Place resident Stanley Green, who says he lived in the Walla Walla area for around fifteen years without access to a personal vehicle, spoke highly of improvements to transportation made in the area during his time here, but also used his time to point out things that could be improved.
“During those years that I didn’t have access to a vehicle I lived three minutes from frequent bus service, it’s now three quarters of a mile to the nearest bus stop,” said Green. “So to come here I bicycled three quarters of a mile to the bus stop, and then came here where, by the way, bicycle parking was a little challenging.”
Commissioner Bertha Clayton, who’s also on the Walla Walla-Columbia Counties Accessible Committees Advisory Board, seconded Green’s remarks and said she had planned to ride her bike to a commissioner’s board meeting but couldn’t think of a place she could park it.
“We need to think about some improvements surrounding this county campus,” she said.
College Place City Council also made the proclamation at their Tuesday meeting, and the same item is on Wednesday’s Walla Walla City Council Agenda.
