Fatal Logging Accident Claims Life of Baker City Man

BAKER COUNTY — (Release from the Baker County Sheriff’s Office) On August 7th at approximately 3:02 p.m., Baker County Sheriff’s Office Dispatch received information regarding a fatal logging accident. The reporting party, who came to the lobby of the Sheriff’s Office, explained that an accident occurred on a job site and employees were transporting the victim to the Sheriff’s Office. The reporting party was in contact with the employees via text as they had limited cell service. 

Pioneer Ambulance and Baker City Fire Department were dispatched and staged at the Baker County Sheriff’s Office. When the logging crew arrived approximately ten minutes later, medics immediately conducted an assessment and determined that the victim had succumbed to his injuries prior to arrival. 

Deputy Ebeling met with the involved parties. During the investigation, it was determined that NSEA Timber was conducting a logging operation near Lily White. The victim, identified as Jeremiah Alan Dayhoff (38 yoa) of Baker City, was setting chokers when a log rolled out from under him causing him to fall. While on the ground, another log rolled onto Dayhoff inflicting fatal injuries. The logging crew, who had extremely limited cell service, loaded Dayhoff into their vehicle and transported him to the Sheriff’s Office.
