SPOKANE – Stephanie Van Marter assumed the role of acting United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Washington last week, after Richard Barker stepped down to return to private practice in Spokane.
Van Marter is a Spokane native who is a 1999 graduate of the Gonzaga University School of Law. During her time at Gonzaga University, she also earned undergraduate degrees in criminal justice and psychology. At that time, she also interned at the U.S. Attorney’s office, volunteered as a victim advocate at Lutheran Family Services and worked with the Spokane Police Department supporting community policing initiatives.
Her prosecutorial career began as deputy prosecuting attorney for Ada County in Boise, Idaho
She has been with U.S. Attorney’s Office for over two decades and has held positions of senior litigation counsel, deputy criminal chief and organized crime drug enforcement task force coordinator.
“I am so grateful to have this opportunity to continue to strengthen Eastern Washington and secure justice for those who call this beautiful and special place home,” stated Van Marter in a news release.
